The legality of selling generic versions of sitagliptin (Januvia) and sitagliptin phosphate (Janumet) by an Indian drug manufacturer Glenmark has been questioned, pharmaceutical industry leaders say, pointing out that both Januvia and Janumet are patented under Merck & Co, CNBC 18 television reports. Leading global pharmaceutical giant Merck & Co has sued Glenmark for launching generic versions of Januvia, according towww.moneycontrol.com. Januvia is considered to be a top-selling drug and is widely used by type 2 diabetes patients throughout the world.
Merck first introduced Januvia to the world market via India in 2008. Initially, since Januvia was introduced in India, Merck was able to sell it at a price 20 percent less than it used to sell the drug in the United States. Problems arose when an Indian drug manufacturer Glenmark began to make “copycat versions.” These versions of Januvia were sold at a lower price which affected Merck’s overall sales.

Women who have metal-on-metal hip implants pass metal ions to their babies during pregnancy, according to a study at Rush University Medical Center. The ions are the result of wear and corrosion as the metal parts rub against each other. This strongly shows that metal-on-metal implants are unsafe.
“We don’t know whether metal ions pose any health risks for pregnant women and their babies,” said Dr. Joshua Jacobs, professor and chairman of orthopaedic surgery at Rush, “but as metal-on-metal implants increase in popularity and use, especially among young, active patients, women of child-bearing age and their doctors need to be aware of these findings when considering options for hip replacements.”
The researchers found that mothers with metal-on-metal implants and their babies had significantly higher levels of chromium and cobalt. Furthermore, the levels of these metals in the blood of mothers with implants interrelated with the levels found in the umbilical cords. Cobalt levels in newborns were about half that in the mothers’ blood, while chromium levels were about 15 percent of the mothers’ chromium levels.
Jacobs added that to be able to find out what these metal ions effect to fetal development is through the formation of a national joint registry, to which clinicians may access long-term data.
